*On Fire* is Ben Stokes‘ account of the summer that changed how England are regarded: the Ashes, the World Cup, and the stretch of cricket in between that nobody had planned for. It is the most honest high-profile cricket autobiography of the last few years, and it is worth knowing what you are signing up for before you start.
This is a long, sometimes uncomfortable listen. It is not a controversy book and it is not a highlight reel. What it is, is a first-person account of what modern international cricket does to the people inside it – which is a different and more useful thing.

What each one covers
On Fire — Ben Stokes
Stokes’ own account of the Ashes and the World Cup that followed, read by the actor Luke Francis. The voice is guarded in places, which is honest rather than coy: some of these passages are clearly difficult to say out loud at all.

The value is in the parts nobody else filmed – the days that were simply bad, the physical work behind the batting that people assume is natural, and what it costs to keep going when a team is struggling. For a club player, that last one is the passage worth staying for.

The Fighter's Mind — Sam Sheridan
Built from a decade of work with elite performers, this is the best-researched book here on what actually happens in the minutes before a match, and it separates the physical response from the meaning attached to it.
Read alongside a player’s own account, it is the sensible pairing: one tells you what it felt like from the inside, the other gives you the framework to make sense of it.

The Art of Captaincy — Mike Brearley with Ed Smith – introduction
Brearley on captaincy – selecting a side, managing a dressing room, and coping with the fact that a captain is judged on a result he only partly controls.
It is the book to reach for if the part of Stokes’ story that interests you is leading a team rather than batting in one.

Who it is for, and who it is not
**Buy it if** you want the player rather than the performance. The outside of Stokes is well documented; this is the inside.
**Expect slow patches.** The story moves through a period of cricket that was genuinely hard, and the pacing reflects that rather than hiding it.
**Pair it** with a performance book if you want the whole picture – the memoir gives you the inside, and the performance book gives you the framework.
How to get the most from it
Give it a continuous run rather than sampling it. The emotional shape of the summer is the point, and it does not survive being dipped into.
The passages on mental health are the ones people quote afterwards, but they land harder if you have listened to the build-up beforehand.
Keep the performance book for a second run of the season, when you know how the story ends and can hear the difference in what is said and what is not.
Common questions
Is the Ben Stokes audiobook worth listening to? Yes. It is a candid, well-written account of an unusual career, and the 2019 summer alone justifies the time.
Who narrates On Fire? The actor Luke Francis – Stokes does not read it himself.
Does On Fire cover Stokes' mental health? Yes, and it is handled directly rather than used as a hook. Those passages are the reason people remember the book.
Is it suitable for younger listeners? It contains strong language and adult subject matter around injuries and mental health, so it is better suited to older teens and adults.
What else should I listen to with it? The Fighter's Mind for the pressure and performance material, and The Art of Captaincy for the leadership side.
