*Bounce* is not a cricket book and that is exactly why it is worth a cricketer’s time. Syed was a leading world chess champion before he turned to performance, and the argument he makes – that talent is built rather than found – reframes most of what people say about improving at a game.
Here is what the audio edition contains, how it is narrated, how long it runs, and three books that take its ideas onto a cricket field.

What it covers
Bounce — Matthew Syed
Matthew Syed on deliberate practice, told through Mozart, Federer, Picasso and Beckham, and read by James Clamp. The famous example – sending children to watch Virginia Wade lose so they could see a defeat properly – is only the starting point.

The uncomfortable version of the message is that hours matter less than the quality of attention inside them, which is a much harder thing to change than effort.

The Inner Game of Tennis — W. Timothy Gallwey with Pete Carroll – introduction
Gallwey on self-talk, imagery and the mistakes we make by trying to control a swing with instructions, read by Dan Woren. It was written about tennis in 1974 and it is the source of most modern cricket coaching language.
It is short enough to finish in a fortnight and it will change how you think about concentration.

The Art of Mental Training — D. C. Gonzalez
D. C. Gonzalez on training the mind as a skill, read by the author. Short, practical and full of exercises that fit between deliveries.
The best value in the mental-game category, and the one that works at the nets.

Who it is for, and who it is not
**Buy it if** you are stuck at the same level despite the hours. It is the clearest published explanation of why some players improve and others do not.
**Expect it to be uncomfortable.** The claim is not flattering to talent, and it is not meant to be.
**Pair it with a practice book.** Syed explains why effort matters; Gonzalez and Gallwey explain what to do with it.
How to get the most from it
Read it in one go if you can – it is an argument, and skipping the middle loses the case.
Then choose one drill to restructure, rather than a list. Deliberate practice means changing something specific and measuring it.
Common questions
Is Bounce worth listening to? Yes. It is one of the few non-sports books that genuinely changes how players train.
How long is the Bounce audiobook? Around eight hours, read by James Clamp.
Does Bounce cover cricket? Not specifically – it uses tennis, chess and music. The applications to sport are the reader's to make.
What else should I listen to? The Inner Game of Tennis for concentration, The Art of Mental Training for exercises, and The Mindful Athlete for attention work.
Is it only for elite players? No. If you are a club player working out why practice is not working, it is arguably more useful to you than to a professional.
